SMALL LOTS, SMART DESIGN
Los Angeles, California

The smallbutsmart 2009 design competition was an initiative focused on innovative, small-scale housing solutions in Los Angeles, often associated with the AIA LA (American Institute of Architects Los Angeles) and discussions around sustainable, high-density, or compact living, sometimes referred to as the "Small Lots, Big Impact" movement.
-
The competition was aimed at Addressing the need for smarter, smaller, and more sustainable housing options in Los Angeles.
-
It emphasized "small but smart" residential design, focusing on compact, well-designed homes that provide high quality of life while reducing environmental impact.
The brief asked to develop design templates that could be used on typical small lot subdivisions throughout the city. It specifically called for affordable housing solutions using a new city ordinance concerning lot subdivision. The design creates an easily replicable, modular system for subdivision and densification. Rooftop living and open decks combined with natural daylight and cross ventilation for all rooms provide an ideal concept for the mild Southern California climate.
