The City of Manhattan Beach asked for the design of a series of benches for their elevated boardwalk that is called the Strand.  After the designs were chosen by a jury, the City published them and looked for donors for each of the benches.

Aside from the aesthetic qualities, the benches had to withstand the rough climatic conditions of the seaside location and be reasonably vandal proof.
