FLEX-CON
Vienna, Austria

Flex-Con is a competition entry to the SOS Aufbau design competition for a refugee center organized by the Sezession, Vienna Austria in 1993. The design is based on the idea of combing shipping containers and courtyard typologies to create housing for refugees from the Balkan wars in the 1990 ties.

Flexcon uses series of shipping containers in combination with locally built infrastructure

to provide livable private residences for variable size families of war refugees.  The courtyard typology provides identification, shelter and private outdoor space, while the use of prefabricated container units in combination with locally installed building elements and infrastructure ensures fast construction, economic viability and re-usability of the family units.

The concept is driven by the idea of private courtyards that contain variations of container configurations to suit different types of multi-generational living models.  The walls of the courtyards create a defensible area where refugee families can keep their belongings.  Bridges allow connections between courtyards to house various types of family constellations.

The built on site elements are contain the staircases as well as the plumbing and electrical utilities while the containers can be arranged and re-arranged in accordance with specific living requirements of each family.
